The benefits of Eucalyptus

Did you know...

For centuries, dried Eucalyptus leaves have been used as a flavoring agent in teas and food, while the oil has been recognized and used for its medicinal and health benefits. Eucalyptus is native to Australia, which is one of the main reasons why Australia is one of the largest sources of this essential oil. Belonging to the hardwood species, Eucalyptus is a type of flowering tree that thrives in Australia and has about 700 varieties. A few of its kind can be seen in the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Taiwan. Other kinds of Eucalyptus trees are grown in the tropical and subtropical regions of the earth that include China, the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East, the Americas, the Mediterranean Basin, Africa and Europe. Eucalyptus Globulus is its botanical name and is also known as blue gum tree, stringy bark tree or fever tree.

The oil and the leaves of the Eucalyptus tree contain Eucalyptol and Cineole, which are two active ingredients that have been recognized as having several medicinal benefits. Recent research suggests that Eucalyptus Oil has antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, analgesic, decongestant, expectorant, stimulating, and deodorant activity. For this reason, it is often used in many commercial products including rash creams, mouthwashes, toothpastes, cough drops, decongestant rubs and inhalers, lozenges, and even cosmetics, perfumes, and aromatherapy products. Due to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties, it is also often used in dental products such as root canal fillers and sealers.

Eucalyptus essential oil is effective for treating several respiratory problems including cold, cough, runny nose, sore throat, asthma, nasal congestion, bronchitis and sinusitis. Eucalyptus oil is antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and decongestant in nature, which makes it a good ingredient in many medicines that treat respiratory problems. A study published in Laryngoscope in 2004 shows its usefulness in treating non-bacterial sinusitis. Patients suffering from non-bacterial sinusitis showed faster improvement when given medicine containing eucalyptus oil. Gargles of eucalyptus oil mixed with warm water are consistently effective in treating sore throats.

I buy my Eucalyptus oil from The Lebermuth Company in South Bend Indiana. Just last week, I was given a tour of their facility, and I was very impressed! I will be using them for as many of my oil needs as I can. They will provide the highest quality oils for our products as you can find anywhere. We currently have Eucalyptus in our candle line and will be adding products to our bath and beauty line soon!
